The Aztec sun god

The Aztec had many beliefs. They believed the sun fought darkness. They believed in 13 heavens. They believd that the earth was flat and also they respected their god very much. They drew pictures that told about their gods.

The Aztec believed in about 1,000 gods. But the one they worshipped the most was the sun god, called Huitzilopochtli. They put great efforts into creating great temples to please the gods.

Sacrificing played an important role in Aztec religion. They made sacrifices to please the sun god. One reason they fought in wars was to capture people to sacrifice. They were offerings to the god so food would grow.

Another thing the Aztec believed in was the afterlife. Instead of the way they lived, the way they died determined if they would go to the sun god or not. If a person died a normal death, they would have to pass the nine lives of the underworld before they were to reach Mictlan. If a woman died in childbirth or if a warrior died in battle, they would go straight to the sun god.
