Aztec fighting a war

The Aztecs did not have kings and queens, but they had a Great Speaker, named The Tlatoani.  He had many political duties.  He would speak to the great Aztec gods.  He was also the head of law courts, priesthood and the army.

The Aztecs did not have any professional army, but they had pro military officers.  The soldiers in the army were just ordinary people.  When a boy was born, they cut off his umbilical cord and then they buried they buried it in the battlefield.  Every boy was going to be able to fight.  They were taught in school about weapons and fighting.  For a person to fight in a war was a great honor.  Some of the weapons they used were spears, slings, and bows and arrows.

These are some of the punishments they had for crimes:
Kidnapping-sold into slavery
Major theft- death
Minor theft- sold into slavery
Drunkenness- head shaved, house destroyed, then death
Treason- death, loss of property, children sold in slavery, destruction of land
Selling substandard goods- loss of property
Cutting down a living tree- death
