Replica of Aztec codices

The language the Aztec used was N'ahuatl.  It was a system of pictures used as the alphabet.  Nouns were the easiest because they could just draw what the noun was.  The art of writing was very hard to learn.  It was mainly done by priests or scribes.  They were the only ones who knew how to read the pictures.  The Aztecs also had books, called Codices.  They were long strips of paper that were made from deerskin or treebark.

The Aztecs had many types of art.  Stone workers carved statues, scribes would paint pictographs, potters would make pots, and feather workers would create magnificent head dresses.

Stone workers would create things from rocks, green jade, black obsidian, and transparent crystals.  They were trained from an early age and they would use simple tools made from wood, bone, and rock.

Scribes would draw pictograms that would record the events.  They would first draw a rough sketch, and then they would add al the details.  The scribes would use vegetables, insects, mineals, and shells to create colors for the pictograms.

The Aztec potters did not use a potters wheel.  They shaped clay with their hands and carved it.  Sometimes they would paint the inside and outside to make it look better.  But, they usually only used two colors.

The feather workers made beautiful headresses made of feathers from tropical birds.  They would also make clothes from the feathers.  Those would be made for royalty and nobility.

The Aztec had various reasons for writing.  They wrote about their history.  They also wrote about their religious ceremonies and they wrote about poetry.  They first drew a outline.  Next, they colored it with minerals, vegetables, shells and insects.
